Finally! Fans get to enjoy a second helping of The Haunted live on a CD. We
haven’t had a real live album since the bands second release and that was only
an extra if you got the import or bought the short lived re-issue (2002s Caught
on Tape was just a straight up DVD release so I don’t count that). This should
be a time to bang your head and wear out your CD player with numerous spins.
Roadkill isn’t making me bang my head or wish I was there, it sucks.
Roadkill doesn’t do a nice job showing off the bands fairly long reigning
career. There is a nice mix of songs at their Amsterdam stop of the tour. From
seeing The Haunted a half dozen times I know there are a handful of songs
missing. At least we get some good crowd pleasers like 99 and the track that
introduced The Haunted to the mainstream, Bury Your Dead.
There are 5 b-sides on the CD portion of Roadkill as well, maybe 4 since
Infernalis Mundi is a short 44 second track that is stupid and pointless. I know
there are a lot more b-sides out there and it would have been real cool if more
of them found their way on this disc or maybe a separate disc full of b-sides.
The DVD portion of Roadkill sucks and I almost try to forget that I put myself
through it. The history portion of the DVD talks about the bands career from
having two singers and just having a rough time getting anywhere. The road movie
on here is short and lame, but the promo videos could make up for the disaster
known as the DVD in the Roadkill bundle.
I found it annoying how The Haunted seemed to complain a lot about going on the
road. Sure we all know by now touring isn’t fun since every band has expressed
this in interviews. But when you have a band that is almost crying and dreading
going on there, even for one day, you might want to snap the DVD in half because
to me it seems like The Haunted wants more and that’s it.
Final Verdict
A part of me wants to say fuck you to The Haunted but I can’t seem to. I’ve
enjoyed the band since their debut self-titled release and I didn’t mind them
when they went into a different approach with their music. Roadkill just makes
you angry, both on the CD and DVD. The DVD will bore you and piss you off with
the bands choice of words and the CD just could have been better. I say wait for
the next CD/DVD release, whenever that might be.
