A new era has indeed started for deathcore six-piece Whitechapel. One of the
shining stars on the Metal Blade label right now, Whitechapel has returned after
two year wait with A New Era of Corruption, the bands first album that is not a
concept release. Sort of a downfall there since I am a fan of concept albums,
but it is still fucking awesome!
A New Era of Corruption is an album about being pissed off. All of the songs are
sort of a downer when it comes to the lyrics, but you can rest well at night
knowing that Murder Sermon, a song about the death of Phil Bozeman’s mother, is
on the record. I am not trying to say this is a good thing, please nobody take
it this way. What I am trying to say is that some bands in the underground don’t
always make terrible songs; they also make songs dealing with something real
personal.
So if you are still reading my review after what I hope won’t piss people off, I
can continue on how much I enjoy this album. One of the biggest surprises on A
New Era of Corruption was the guest vocals from Chino Moreno of Deftones. Who
would have thought in a million years that Moreno would appear on a deathcore
album? Jesus Christ not only does this rock, but at the same time Reprogrammed
to hate my possibly be my favorite track on the album. It has some much raw
energy and anger in it I just want to get up and punch holes in my wall.
I really like how each song has its own special something to it too. A New Era
of Corruption doesn’t have the same sounding aspects to it that some deathcore
acts tend to do. Tracks don’t start out the same and they certainly do not have
the same awesome guitar breakdowns in it. Holy shit the guitar work on here is
out of this work. Combined with everything else this album has to offer you will
have to grab a tissue since your ears are going to bleed from this heavy fucking
metal music.
Final Verdict
Two years is all it took to make an album like this? Whitechapel has brought out
a damn good album in the deathcore scene this year and it will be tough to beat.
I have had a hard time doing my job, listening and reviewing other albums
because this record kicks so much ass. Fans of modern death metal music should
pick this one up with no questions asked.
