Mudvayne started out during the nu-metal revolution and some how lived through
it. Instead of going back to their heavier roots like they promised Mudvayne is
taking a huge step backwards. Is The New Game the worst album Mudvayne has
released in their twelve year career?
The New Game is a bad attempt at Mudvayne trying to break it into the
mainstream. Mudvayne already got a lot of fame with a few of their songs on
previous albums but this time around you can tell the entire album was written
and produced to be a huge commercial hit. This is not the kind of music that
Mudvayne is good at and they should have realized that when they released Lost
and Found back in 2005.
Each of the songs on this album has that signature Mudvayne sound, the kind that
annoys you to the very last second of the song. The ear bleeding sound of sound
of the instrumentation is enough to make anyone go crazy. Serious the same few
chords are heard on the entire album and then you have Ryan Martinie’s annoying
bass plucking. This album would have been much better if it was released five or
six years ago, now it just sounds like an album that needs to be taken out to
the back and shot to death.
Chad Gray’s vocals are unforgivable. When Mudvayne first started you could hear
the energy that came from Gray has he sung and screamed the lyrics. Things have
never been the same for Gray when he became the vocalist for Hellyeah, one of
the worst super groups in the heavy metal scene. Chad Gray needed to stick with
the formula that made Mudvayne famous, too much fat needs trimmed off this new
rendition of the band.
Final Verdict
Mudvayne’s The New Game can be filed under biggest disappointments of 2008. This
is the sort of album that would kill a band, but seeing how the band keeps
gaining new fans from the most unusual areas there is no need to say goodbye to
these guys yet. For now though I can express how much I dislike this album, you
are better off dusting off your copies of L.D. 50 and The End of All Things to
Come.
