After almost 30 million records sold world wide Nickelback is hoping to make that number go up even more with their sixth release, Dark Horse. While Nickelback has had a strike formula for all of their albums it is safe to say that these Canadian’s are trying something completely different.

By now you have heard the reaction over the new Nickelback album. Most critics hate the album so much they are calling it the worst record of the year. I find this statement a little harsh, Dark Horse is one of the most diverse albums Nickelback has ever release. The new sound they have added into their songs are something I would have never expected from Nickelback. Instead of sounding out of place or tacky this new sound is something the band needed to keep the interest of their fans and at the same time gain new fans that appreciate music for what it’s worth.

One problem that I really dislike about Dark Horse is the amount of lyrics that deal with sexual topics. Something in Your Mouth is set to be the bands second single, hitting the airwaves in mid December. This song is one big sex fest ready to get into clubs across the United States. Shakin’ Hands is just the same, Chad Kroeger is either a very lonely man or he found a new love for 80s songs that dealt with sexual themes, which pretty much means all of the big songs from this time frame.

Both Chad Kroeger and Ryan Peake amazed me with their phenomenal guitar playing. Dark Horse goes all out with some of the riffs both these men play. Lead guitarist Ryan Peake has never done anything this good before. There are some dark sounding guitar parts on this album that really amazed me and I wish this sound was used on the entire album. You’d think with the albums cover that this is a dark album from Nickelback, not true.

Along with the few dark parts on this album Nickelback has delivered some country, nu-metal, and almost rap like songs. At times the album did remind me of Limp Bizkit, not the good Limp Bizkit either (yes I like Limp Bizkit). I could see Dark Horse being the first album from Nickelback and breaks into other genres. We could hear a Nickelback song on country radio or television real soon.

Final Verdict
Don’t believe everything you read about this album. Nickelback’s Dark Horse album is one of the better Nickelback albums that has been released in years. It is not as good as the bands classic Silver Side Up album, but it does have a solid position in second. This album is worth the purchase, give into the bands hype and make sure they have another platinum album under their belt.
