This 1979 film is based on a manga by Masaaki Soto, Star of David: Hunting for Beautiful Girls is the story of a young man named Tatsuya. Tatsuya is of whose outward respectability covers his urges for rape and torture. Tatsuya goes to find women and then brings them to his basement where he does some of the most tortures acts you could imagine.

I am really having a hard time trying to write a review on this movie. What the hell is wrong with me finding movies like this, messed up films that either are too grotesque or borderline should never have been made. Star of David’s plot just shouldn’t really be discussed yet at the same time I think you should know about it. This way you can learn if watching this movie is a good idea or not. There is no way you can praise cinema like this, there is a reason why this kind of shit almost never sees the light of day for quite some time.

Like any movie in this nature you can expect some graphic parts without any penetration. The lengthy torture and other sexual scenes are more than enough for most but it seems like the director, Norifumi Suzuki, wants his viewers to get the whole picture. I think Suzuki went too far at points and he makes the film almost seem like a snuff movie, rather that something where he is trying to get a point across.

Some of the movies extras try to make the movie seem like something that was getting a point across, like I just said above. What in the hell is the point to something like this? I don’t care what anyone on this DVD says this movie was made to get manga fans excite and to shock. I think it was created more to get a shock value, but in no way could I see this as being a teaching tool for anything.

The film is presented in a 16:9 widescreen format with Japanese audio. There is an option for English subtitles so that will help when you want to know what they are saying. Trust me you don’t want to know what they are saying at times. I think the overall production on this disc is pretty good, only a few parts where you could hear picture noise. Other than that you can expect the usual mid-DVD quality with graininess in dark places and colors that are not too vibrant.

This disc also features a bunch of trailers for other movies. I never did get around to watching these since I was scared they could have been more movies like this. I did managed to get most of the way through the commentary with Suzuki, but what was said in the interviews is elaborated here. Pretty much a big yawn fest if you ask me.

There are two versions of this movie going around from what I heard. A double sided discs contains all the featurettes plus the rated and unrated versions of the film. The copy I have has one of the ladies from the film, holding a white whip, with her tits exposed. Does the version I have contain the rated or unrated? I don’t know and I don’t want to know or find out.

Final Verdict
For a movie based off of a manga I can say Star of David sucks. I hate what the movie is about and I really dislike how it is put off to be a movie with a real meaning to it. What is the fucking meaning behind a movie with content like this? Unless you want to own one of the most vile films out there I would never try to add this to a DVD collection.
