What the fuck is up with George Clooney as of late? The man is showing up in
all of these goddamn films and half of them…wait no, most of them suck! The one
movie that really got me pissed off at the movie theaters was The Men Who Stare
at Goats. What a way to spend money on your honeymoon, this movie sucks. But
wait a second. Why would I watch this movie again on blu-ray when I already
hated it in theaters?
That is a good fucking question. The Men Who Stare At Goats is only loosely
based on men staring at goats. Maybe 10 minutes at most is based around men
staring at goats. The rest of the movie is a bull shit “could be real” story
about Bob Wilton, a reporter, which reports a story on Lyn Cassady. Pretty
fucking boring but wait we have George Clooney and Ewan McGregor in this movie,
it has to be good…right?
The whole movie goes back and forth about Cassady’s time in training as a Jedi.
No not a Star Wars Jedi, a Jedi that hates war but uses his powers to help those
who might be in danger. You hate war but you could/might use your powers to help
those? Sounds like these Jedi are as confused as a teenage girl, thinking eating
her best friend out will get mommy and daddy to listen to her more.
I mean this movie just goes on and on with stupid bull shit. Throw in some
characters that only make things worse, Bill Django, and you got a movie that
will bore you to death. Oh wait maybe you won’t be bored to death, that could be
the Jedi fucking with you. See how I used the movies theme in that last
statement to make a funny?
The material that must have been placed on the table for this movie must have
been small. I think the whole reason they wanted to make this movie was to put
out a random movie name on posters for everyone to see. Nice job on getting that
name on posters and now dvd and blu-ray cases. Maybe next time concentrate more
on the actually movie.
The video presentation on this shitty movie wasn’t half bad. The colors and
contrast were dead on, even during the desert sequences that now look better
than ever I think. Black levels in the movie do suffer a bit, especially when
our two main characters are stuck in a prison. Even during that sequence you can
hear a little noise from the movie. Not uncommon but you would have thought this
wouldn’t occur in a movie of this caliber, even though I hated it.
The Men Who Stare at Goats is presented in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio for all of you
high definition/technology buffs. The resolution is also in 1080p and is encoded
with AVC MPEG-4.
The Dolby Digital TrueHD 5.1 audio was not necessary. The dialogue and tiniest
sound effects can be heard, but why would I want to hear that shit? Even though
I wasn’t a fan of this film I still don’t see why they went all out here. I
guess it is a blu-ray and you should have the best. With my entire bitching put
aside there were some dubbing issues during the film, only minor though so don’t
sweat it.
Our special features on this disc are something. Two audio commentaries, one
with the director and the other is with the book’s author. Sort of strange how
the two couldn’t have done one track together, just saying. That might have been
more interesting than hearing one guy reliving these so called real events and
another one loving his movie.
The few minutes worth of deleted scenes are just that, deleted scenes that
thankfully got cut from the final product. The few other extras are featurettes
about the film. Pretty boring shit if you ask me but at least there is something
on the disc.
This package also comes with a digital copy of the film. So if you want to watch
this one on the go or if you want to torture some friends then put it on your
portable device right away.
Final Verdict
The Men Who Stare at Goats is a boring movie that should have never been made. I
really thought this movie was bad in theaters and the blu-ray version just
proves my theory. All of the extras are lame and the quality of the audio and
film is funny, mainly since there are some minor problems with them. Does that
tell you that they maybe didn’t care about this movie? Who knows, I just think
you should keep this one at a rental.
