Back in 2002 an outdated game known as Dead to Rights came out on the Playstation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and even the PC. Dead to Rights was hard as fuck and the game looked like it was created for the last generation of systems. Soon to follow Dead to Rights II came out, a prequel to the first game, and then after a few short months Dead to Rights: Reckoning was released, a prequel to Dead to Rights II.

Before I even go into Retribution…what the fuck? Two games in the franchise were released in one year, each serving as a prequel to the last game in the series. I did not know that Jack Slate and his dog Shadow were so goddamn important since the dawn of time. Maybe the four year break in-between games could be an answer on if Retribution is any good or not.

Dead to Rights: Retribution is pretty much a revamped version of the original Dead to Rights. Retribution isn’t a sequel or prequel, it is the first game in the series with some changes and a new look. Instead of looking like a Playstation 3 game, Dead to Rights: Retribution looks like a Playstation 2 game. Hey at least the developers know the rule about the Dead to Rights franchise. Stick with last generation of gaming. That way costs will be down on production, reviewers will tear it about (bad press sometimes leads to high sales), and stupid parents will pick the game up when it hits the bargain bins after the games fourth or sixth week out in stores.

Retribution is a new take on the first game in the Dead to Rights franchise. What, was it a bad idea to make a prequel to Read to Rights: Reckoning already?

This American Bandstand of a game is about Officer Jack Slate and his dog Shadow. Slate is a cop who likes to wear non-work related clothing and Shadow looks more like a bull moose than a dog. They are the best of friends and perfect partners, which is when Jack’s did gives up Shadow to his son and after Jack’s dad dies. Oh shit did I ruin the story?

After Jack’s father dies the game takes a new approach on everything that is Retribution. Wait not really, the game is still the same piece of shit that it was when being played for those first few minutes. I have no idea if I am playing a real game or a last generation game that came out too late. Oh fucking God, this game is just like the rest. What is the big idea with the Dead to Rights series looking like a last generation game?

How does this look like a last generation game? Oh I don’t know maybe EVERYTHING! The graphics look like a year 4 release on the Playstation 2. Jack has these hands that look like they are swollen. Enemies look the same and even when the game introduces a new enemy, with a shitty 5 second cutscene, it is pretty much the same goddamn enemy with a new shitty outfit. I mean come on were they even trying with Retribution? I sure in hell don’t see a reason to think that Volatile Games put no more than 30 seconds into the development of Dead to Rights: Retribution.

There is a bit of hope to this games graphics with the cutscenes. They are mildly next generation-ish. You know though after each cutscene that you will have to play this God awful game again. That is what sucks so much and this fucking thing can take almost 7 hours to beat. 7 long hours. Just put it on easy and blaze through it, trust me. Don’t give two shits on all those achievements or trophies, this game isn’t worth it.

Holy shit I forgot to talk about the animations in this game. See…see I try to say something good about this game and then I remember another bad aspect to it. The animations are fucking terrible. During the entire game…just remembered something else. There are maybe 4 real stages in this game, all of them look the same and every stage feels like you are going backwards, but you really aren’t.

Ok now back to the animations. They suck. Shadow has poor animations and Jack looks like a douche bag doing his Neo moves. Bullet time takes forever to load and it is pointless. Doesn’t help worth shit! Volatile Games ruins this so called cool part of the game with piss poor animations. Stupid ass game.

Audio is a joke. Dialogue in the game sounds like it was phoned in by the actors. Only towards the end of the game does it start to get not as bad. Maybe the checks cleared and once the actors saw the money in their accounts they went a small step forward. Still not that great so don’t pick up Dead to Rights: Retribution from the floor, let me keep beating it to a bloody pulp.

Sound effects sound just like the second word I brought up, effects. They are recycled sound effects from the other game Volatile Games brought out, Reservoir Dogs. Remember that fucking game? I sure in the hell do because I reviewed that damn game and it sucked ass. Funny part I remember complaining how that game, released on the Playstation 2, felt like an original Playstation release. Oh the irony in all of this.

For some unknown reason Retribution has a not so bad score. I mean it isn’t terrible where I am going to rage. Let me put it this way. Retribution’s music score is the best part of the game and it is a shame that it is being wasted in a game that plays like ass.

Final Verdict
This game is fucking terrible! I want to throw up each time I read descriptions on this game, mainly since more time was put into that shit than the actual game. Oh awesome hand-to-hand combat…blah blah blah…fuck this game. I only cared for the games score and that part of the game isn’t that great. If you really feel like taking a gamble or watching a homeless person die or starvation then buy this game.
